Dave Pace

Dave Pace joined Starbucks Coffee Company in July 2002 as Executive Vice President of Partner Resources responsible for the company’s overall partner (employee) and organizational strategies.

From 1981 to 1999, Pace held a wide variety of positions with PepsiCo Inc. and subsequently with the spun-off Tricon Global Restaurants (now YUM! Brands Inc.).  From 1995 to 1999, Pace served as Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Tricon Restaurants International, which employed more than 300,000 people in 92 countries.  In addition, Pace held overseas executive assignments in Cyprus for the Middle East/Africa region of Pepsi-Cola International and in London for its European operations.

Between 1999 and 2000, Pace served as the Chief Human Resources Officer for HomeGrocer.com, a Seattle-based internet start-up specializing in the online sale and delivery of groceries to the home.  Prior to joining Starbucks, Pace held the position of Executive Vice President for i2 Technologies, the Dallas-based software firm providing industry leading solutions in supply chain and supplier relationship management.

Pace currently serves in Board positions with the Starbucks Foundation, the Human Resource Policy Association, the Cornell University Center for Advanced Human Resources Studies (CAHRS), the University of Southern California’s Center for Effective Organizations (CEO) and AmericaSCORES, a national non-profit organization that serves at-risk children through after school programs that combine soccer and poetry to improve the health and literacy of America’s youth. 

In addition to current Board work, Pace has previously served in Board positions with both the Taco Bell and i2 Foundations and was Chairman of the Board of Governors of the United Hockey League, a minor league professional organization from 1998 through 2002.  In 2005, he was inducted as a Fellow in the National Academy of Human Resources and in 2007 was named the Academy of Management’s Human Resources Executive of the Year.  Pace has been featured in many business articles, collaborated on several videos and is a regular speaker at several Universities across the U.S.

Pace received his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University in 1981.

Spencer Clark
Chief Learning Officer (retired)

Spencer Clark recently retired as Chief Learning Officer of Cadence Design Systems Inc., the industry leader in the electronic design automation space. In this role he built Cadence University to drive global implementation of technical, professional, executive and leadership development. He was also responsible for implementing an organizational development practice within the Cadence culture and the development and integration of an explicit, recognized best practice talent development program including the Cadence succession planning process. 

Spencer currently is the Executive Director of the Chief Learning Officer Network for 52 top companies primarily in the US, is co-teaching Global Perspectives as part of the MBA program at Santa Clara University and is consulting with companies doing business in Asia.

Spencer’s background is a blend of practical business experiences combined with a strategic formal education in support of his professional objectives.  He has earned roles as President, Chief Operating Officer and General Manager with Fortune 100 companies including General Electric, Litton Industries and Black & Decker, as well as serving small privately run companies.

Committed to facilitating people in the process of their professional development, Spencer has acquired additional expertise in the deployment of 360° feedback programs, change management, and executive coaching.

For the five years preceding Cadence, he was President of his own consulting company using his skills to improve the performance in a variety of industries and disciplines, including Power, Defense, Human Performance, Security, and Manufacturing.

Spencer holds degrees in mathematics and physics, an MBA, an Executive MBA, and is an accredited Professional Nuclear Engineer. He has completed GE’s prestigious multi-year Leadership Development Program at the Crotonville Learning Center. The Crotonville experience became Spencer’s inspiration for his last role as CLO of Cadence and the foundation of his enduring passion to contribute to the building of great companies.
 
Spencer haa served a member of the Board of Directors for the Zhongguancun-Cadence Institute of Software Technology, the Advisory Board for Leavey School of Business Santa Clara University, Board of Directors for Project Hired Inc, Board of Directors-East Bay Leadership Council.

Jeannette Liebman
Group Vice President,

Applied Materials

Ms. Jeannette Liebman was named group Vice President of Global Human Resources in July 2005 and is responsible for all of Applied Materials’ human resource (HR) functions globally, including: Line HR and Corporate functions such as staffing, compensation & benefits, and HR information systems.  She is also responsible for Applied Global University and Community and University Affairs.

Most recently, Ms. Liebman held a variety of HR positions at Intel Corporation, last serving as director of Human Resources for the Technology and Manufacturing Group in charge of all HR functions supporting more than 40,000 employees worldwide.  Prior to that, she was responsible for the design, development and implementation of HR services and products for Intel’s Corporate Business Groups.  After joining Intel in 1982, she drove major programs in the areas of organizational and leadership development, performance management, and employee development.  Prior to joining Intel, Ms. Liebman held management positions at Homequity Corporation and worked for Merrill Lynch Relocation.

Ms. Liebman received a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Elmhurst College.

Bill MacGowan

As Chief Human Resources Officer and Executive Vice President of People and Places, Bill MacGowan is focused on Sun's biggest asset, our workforce. His mission is to attract, develop and retain outstanding talent for Sun, and provide them with the knowledge and work environment to perform at their best.
MacGowan's People and Places organization is responsible for developing reward strategies that attract the best and brightest people, creating innovative learning and development opportunities for employees, providing flexible work arrangement through Sun's iWork program that allows us to draw on a broad, diverse talent pool, managing Sun's global facilities portfolio and identifying strategic locations targeted for workforce growth.

MacGowan was most recently the Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Sun Microsystems. In this role, he set the strategic direction for HR and organized the function to focus on several big pieces of work: advising Sun's executives on workforce and organizational issues, delivering HR services to Sun's global workforce, establishing strong total rewards packages for employees, and driving company-wide employee communications.

MacGowan joined Sun Microsystems in June 1998 to lead HR for Sun's Enterprise Services division. As his responsibilities at Sun grew, he served as Vice President of HR for Sun's Systems, Storage and Operations business groups, and later as Vice President of Human Resources, Global Centers of Expertise, in which Bill led all corporate HR functions.

MacGowan brings to the role 25 years of experience in leading Human Resources organizations. Previously, Bill was a Vice President of Human Resources for Quest Diagnostics and Corning Inc. Earlier in his career, he gained extensive HR experience, with a particular focus in compensation, at the global pharmaceuticals firm Allergan and at aerospace/defense contractor Northrop Grumman. In his personal time, MacGowan serves as a national trustee for the American Foundation for the Blind. Bill completed his BA degree in Political Science at Claremont McKenna College.

Douglas J. Richards

SunPower Corporation

Douglas J. Richards joined SunPower Corp. in 2007 and serves as the company’s vice president of human resources and corporate services. 

In this role, Richards is responsible for leading all Human Resources initiatives, driving Corporate Services and managing the company’s Facilities organization worldwide.

Prior to joining SunPower, Richards was vice president of human resources and administration for SelectBuild, a $1.8 billion wholly owned subsidiary of BMHC, a company that serves 19 of the top 25 high-volume builders.  Previously, Richards held strategic positions at BlueArc, Compaq Computer Corp and Apple Computer, Inc. 

He has more than 21 years of experience developing and driving key HR programs for Fortune 100 companies and venture-backed startups.  Richards graduated from California State University, Chico, with a bachelors of arts degree in public administration.

Sweeney Edward Sweeney

World Wide Human Resources

National Semiconductor

Edward Sweeney returned to National Semiconductor in May, 2002 after serving as Vice President of Worldwide Human Resources at Vitria Technology, Inc., a leading supplier of integrated e-business software.

Prior to that, he was Vice President of Human Resources for Candescent Technologies Corporation, a manufacturer of flat-panel displays.


From 1983 to 1998 he served as a Vice President of Human Resources for National Semiconductor's Central Manufacturing Technology Group and the company's Analog Products Group. He also directly supported National's worldwide sales and marketing organization and the company's manufacturing facility in Greenock, Scotland.

Sweeney has a bachelor's degree in organization behavior and a master's degree in Human Resources and organization development, both from the University of San Francisco.
